Digital Transformation: Don’t Rush In

It’s no coincidence that cybersecurity month is October, the spookiest month of the year. We continue to experience a whole lot of bumps in the night. Threat Stack found that 73% of companies have at least one critical security misconfiguration in their AWS configurations, usually brought on by internal mistakes. While these aren’t caused by malicious actors, it is often during times of great activity when things slip through the cracks. Often accelerated throughout 2020 and 2021, the rush to complete, or start, digital transformation projects is unprecedented. However, studies have shown that while 91% of businesses engage in some form of digital transformation, 70% still won’t achieve their desired results.

A key element to avoiding a misshapen digital transformation? Patience. Rushed projects can overlook important security considerations, which may or may not be caught. By performing due diligence to ensure all relevant technology meets expectations for safety, you can avoid devastating system breakdowns and harmful breaches. Before you can fully enter the path to modernization, it’s best to plan exactly what you need to do:

Take stock of your current hardware - Make sure you have a complete assessment of your organization’s ecosystem. Not only will you be able to properly ensure that every hardware system can be reconfigured, but you can examine how to best use your existing stack for your modernization efforts. One example we’ve seen be successful is storage cascading: it allows for growing data volumes to be safe and accessible while both extending the useful life of storage and opening up the budget to newer services needed to complete digital transformation initiatives.

Have a partner you trust - It’s important that when undertaking any major endeavor you have a partner you trust with the intimate details of your data center. A partner that, in case something goes wrong, is able to plug in and solve the problem before it becomes catastrophic.

Mind the gap - Technology isn’t the only reason digital transformation gets bogged down. Oftentimes, it is because people have not been trained up to deal with the new technologies. According to the Computer Technology Industry Association, 46% of organizations believe that the skills gap is growing. By investing in employees or identifying the right partners, you can avoid many pitfalls that end up as critical human errors.
