The future of data storage is hyper-local – Seagate

In a recent interview with Digitimes, Seagate’s VP of global sales Banseng Teh has revealed the serious storage challenges facing CTOs in the near future.
According to Teh, the aggregate global data volume will reach 163ZB by 2025. Put into context, that’s 16 billion hard drives with a capacity of 12TB each.
Teh goes on to quote several other statistics that demonstrate the scale of the challenge:
- Global aggregate data holdings will grow 10x between now and 2025.
- By 2025 the average person will have 4800 interactions with IoT devices every day. That’s one every 18 seconds.
- At least 45% of IoT data will be stored, processed and analyzed at the network edge by 2019.
The edge is where it’s at
As we’ve discussed on the CDS blog several times in the past, in order to make proper use of IoT data, it will need to be processed at the network edge. Real-time systems require real-time analytics – and the latency of Cloud storage will reduce the overall efficiency of these applications.
As you would expect from a vendor, Teh believes that the answer is a next generation hard drive. Seagate is pushing their new heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) technology as “the most competitive storage cost per TB capacity”. They are also actively developing integrations between HAMR and shingled magnetic recording (SMR), two-dimensional magnetic recording (TDMR), and multi-actuator technology (MAT).
For forward-thinking CTOs, it appears that raw capacity may not be the biggest problem they face with IoT developments. More pressing will be the challenge of installing and managing vast datasets and supporting infrastructure at the network edge.
