The never-ending growth of corporate data is a headache for both CTO and CIO – a fact that many OEMs use as a tool to move their customers onto rolling upgrade programs. Logically, increased capacity demands require new hardware to cope.
But an analysis of the data being collected and stored tells a different story.
Unstructured data is not speed reliant
According to members of the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA), the need to store more data for longer is increasing. 70% of those questioned by the SNIA are expected to hold data for more than 20 years.
Tellingly, the vast majority of this unstructured data goes stale very quickly. According to some reports as much as 80% of unstructured data held by business goes “stale” within 90 days of capture. The information is retained to meet compliance demands, or for reuse at some unspecified point in the future.
Put into context, almost 80% of new data is stored simply because business rules demand it. This information will never be routinely accessed or used – so where is the logic in deploying new systems to process it?
The cascade-down approach to hardware redeployment makes sense
According to research quoted by HPE , data storage needs are growing at a rate of 40% per year. Yet despite this fundamental truth, IT budgets remain relatively flat. Following the OEM’s defined upgrade path to handle increased data volumes is not only illogical, but also economically unsustainable in the long term.
The money spent upgrading hardware to store rarely-accessed data could be better spent on other strategic IT projects.
So instead of buying all-new hardware, you will probably find that redeploying your own post-warranty hardware makes more sense. Backed by a comprehensive third party maintenance and support agreement, your team can use older hardware resources to safely store unstructured data over the long-term for far less than a rolling upgrade program will cost.
