The need for ubiquitous access to corporate systems has seen an explosion in virtual desktop implementations. The ability to access corporate applications any time, any place from any device is hugely attractive for enterprises looking to add increased mobility to their operations.

And the ability to provision and deploy pre-configured desktops significantly reduces management overheads and operating costs.

The issue of performance

VDI success is completely reliant on performance. Any bottleneck – processing, bandwidth, or storage – will greatly impair the user’s experience and their productivity. 

It is vital then that the storage supporting VDI is optimized for maximum performance – at least at the front end. The type of storage controller used will have major implications, so your system design must consider issues like expected load, the types of database being used and the specific resource demands of any installed applications.

Optimal performance may be achieved by further separating applications and data, with as much as possible being shifted off the native VDI infrastructure and into secondary storage. Adding additional capacity typically adds to the cost of the deployment – unless you choose to repurpose post-warranty storage arrays for hosting the offloaded data.

Further segregation of data based on its relevance or frequency of access will also help to maintain access speeds – particularly if archive information is pushed back to older spinning disk arrays.

Boosting scalability

Just like any other aspect of your IT infrastructure, the VDI platform will also need to be scalable. Whether you need to deploy even more desktops, or applications resource demands continue to rise, your VDI infrastructure will need to scale accordingly.
